The world number 153 Maxime Cressy has never made it past the third round of a Grand Slam with two previous second round appearances at the Australian Open and the US Open. He reached the second round this time around after a five-set thriller against Pablo Carreno Busta. It is Cressy’s greatest victory in his career against the world number 12 and an opponent that had reached the semi-final of this tournament just last year. Nikoloz Basilashvili had a slightly more comfortable and less dramatic progression into the second round as his first round opponent, Sebastian Korda, withdrew from the match in the second set after Basilashvili had taken the first set.
THE PREDICTION
The result of this match is now surprisingly close to call because of the form of Cressy. The American made it through the ever competitive qualification tournament before an impressive first round victory against the ninth seed in the event. Basilashvili remains 112 places above his opponent in the world rankings but could come in slightly undercooked following his one-set match in the first round. As much as the Georgian should remain the slight favourite, the best bet for this could be overs in terms of games played as it should be a four or five set match.
