World number 27 Dan Evans overcame a tricky first round encounter with Thiago Monteiro in four sets to reach the second round of the US Open. The 31-year-old is still not firing on all cylinders but he will be all the better for his win on Monday after a difficult summer in what has still proved to be his best season on tour. Facing him is world number 64 Marcos Giron after the American took out Antoine Hoang in three convincing sets. The 28-year-old enjoyed a strong campaign at the Winston-Salem Open last week where he eventually lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals.
THE PREDICTION
This will be the second meeting between Dan Evans and Marcos Giron this year after the British number one beat Giron in the round of 16 at the Murray River Open. Evans went on to win his first ATP title there in Melbourne as part of an excellent first third of the season in which he also beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets at the Monte-Carlo Masters. His form has dropped some way off since but a win over Thiago Monteiro should help settle some pre-tournament nerves. Evans beat Giron in straight sets back in February but the American is a grafter capable of grinding at least one set out of this encounter. Take Evans to win outright here for that reason.
