World number 24 Reilly Opelka has enjoyed his best season on tour despite not yet winning an ATP title this season. The 24-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Italian Open earlier this season and then went one better by reaching his first Masters final at the Canadian Open, losing to Daniil Medvedev. Opelka beat Soonwoo Kwon in three tight but ultimately secure sets on Tuesday and he is being tipped for a deep run here. World number 60 Lorenzo Musetti has also enjoyed the best season of his young career but he has struggled with his form for a few months since an incredible five-set defeat to Novak Djokovic at Roland-Garros back in June. In fact, the 19-year-old came back from a set down on Tuesday to earn his first win since Roland-Garros against Emilio Nava.
THE PREDICTION
Opelka beat Musetti in what was then something of a shock result back at the Italian Open and that first round straight-sets win spurred the big-serving American on to the last four. This rematch will mean something to Musetti, who has been out of the spotlight too long for someone who has thoroughly enjoyed his hype this season, but Opelka’s game suits these conditions and this home crowd down to a tee. They do not celebrate a power game like Opelka’s better anywhere else in the world and he should be the man to reach the third round here. Musetti has so far not taken well to playing the villain in big matches.
