World number 98 Lauren Davis reached a career-high 26th in the WTA world rankings back in 2917, when she won the Auckland International for her only WTA title to date. The 27-year-old beat qualifier Viktoriya Tomova in three sets on Tuesday to reach the second round of the US Open for a fourth time. 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu was part of an altogether more exciting three-set battle with in-form Viktorija Golubic. The 21-year-old was full of her usual fire and if she can stay fit this fortnight she will be a solid candidate to reach at least the quarter-finals. The Canadian finished runner-up to Ash Barty at the Miami Open earlier this season with injury forcing her to retire in the second set.
THE PREDICTION
Sixth seed Bianca Andreescu looked good on Tuesday in her first round win but the Canadian can sometimes pull the wool over your eyes with her energy and fierce battle-cries. The former US Open champion has every chance of winning a second title this year but her fitness issues this season makes backing her a difficult thing to do. The world number seven should have more than enough to oust her next opponent in straight sets, with Lauren Davis’ level far from Andreescu’s at this moment in time.
