31-year-old Kristina Kucova qualified well to reach the main draw at the US Open for only the second time on her career and she beat Ann Li in comfortable straight sets on Monday. The 31-year-old has never made it past the second round of a Grand Slam. Former world number one Simona Halep’s fitness issues were tossed to one side the same day as she beat in-form Camila Giorgi in straight sets. The two-time Grand Slam champion made the semi-finals here in 2015.
THE PREDICTION
News of world number 13 Simona Halep’s race against time to make the first round at the US Open seem to have been exaggerated at least a small amount after the Romanian beat a really tough opponent in Camila Giorgi. The 29-year-old has struggled with her fitness all season long but still managed to reach the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, with the US Open the last Grand Slam she has not reached the final in. Given what we saw on Monday, Halep should be far too much for Kristina Kucova here. Take the 12th seed to win in comfortable straight sets.
