THE LOWDOWN
Former world number five Kevin Anderson was part of yet another five-set slog on Monday and, like so many of his Grand Slam marathons over the years, the South African ultimately prevailed over Jiri Vesely. 35-year-old Anderson finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal here in 2017 a year before also finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon in 2018 but he won his seventh ATP title last month at the Hall of Fame Open in Newport. World number 14 Diego Schwartzman had an altogether easier experience with a straight-sets victory over Ricardas Berankis. The 29-year-old reached a career-high of eighth last season and qualified for the ATP Finals but he has fallen away from that level this year.
THE PREDICTION
This will be a wonderfully varied match on court between two totally different playstyles and the pair have a history of long matches. Anderson was the winner of their first encounter in four sets at the 2015 Australian Open and he also won at the Nice Open a year later, whilst Diego Schwartzman made it 2-1 with a five-set epic in the round of 16 at Roland-Garros in 2018. On hard courts, Anderson’s power serve gives him an edge over 5”7’ Schwartzman but if the Argentine can get enough returns in he will have the edge in the rallies for pace. Take both players to win a set here and sit back for what could well go north of three hours late on Wednesday.
