25-year-old Katerina Siniakova will be one of the favourites for the Women’s Doubles title at the US Open alongside partner Barbora Krejcikova but she got her Singles campaign off to a strong start with a straight-sets win over Anastasija Sevastova. The 25-year-old won Roland-Garros alongside Krejcikova and used that momentum to reach her first WTA Singles final at the Bad Homburg Open, where she lost to Angelique Kerber. 17th
seed Maria Sakkari is in need of a convincing run at the US Open after a difficult summer but she also got her campaign underway well with a straight-sets win over Marta Kostyuk. The 26-year-old still only has one WTA title, won at the Rabat Open in 2019, but it should not be long before more come her way.
THE PREDICTION
Siniakova and Sakkari are completing the set here in their fourth meeting on tour, remarkably with a match at each individual Grand Slam. Sinakova leads their head-to-head record 2-1 with wins in the first round of the Australian Open in 2018 and second round of Roland-Garros in 2018, whilst Sakkari won their first encounter in the first round of Wimbledon in 2017. Since their last match Sakkari’s game has progressed emphatically but Sinakova is no pushover after a strong summer this season. Take Sakkari to win outright here but it would not be a surprise to see this go all the way to a tight decider.
