World number four Karolina Pliskova got her 2021 US Open campaign underway in predictably straightforward fashion to beat Caty McNally in straight sets on Tuesday. The 29-year-old finished runner-up to Angelique Kerber here in 2016 after beating the heavy favourite Serena Williams in the semi-finals and she has less obstacles in her way this time around. 20-year-old Amanda Anisimova also came through her first round match against Zarina Diyas in straight sets to play in the second round at Flushing Meadows for a second time. The world number 75 is on her way back to form after a difficult year but she is very capable of more having reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros in 2019.
THE PREDICTION
Pliskova has never lost to Amanda Anisimova in three previous meetings, beating the young American in straight sets at Indian Wells in 2018, the Wuhan Open in 2019 and just last month at the Canadian Open. All three matches came on hard courts at prestigious events and that record leaves little room for interpretation for Anisimova at this moment in time. An outright win for the fourth seed would be the wise move but the Czech should be winning this in two once again.
