World number 13 Hubert Hurkacz’s chances at a strong US Open campaign went up exponentially after beating Egor Gerasimov in straight sets on Tuesday. The Pole won his first Singles Masters title at the Miami Open earlier this season and went on to reach the semi-finals at Wimbledon in a stunning run in July. World number 89 Andreas Seppi had it tougher in an energy-sapping five-set marathon match against Marton Fucsovics. The Italian won the deciding Championship tiebreak 15-13 in a huge win, much like his defeat of Roland-Garros’ 20th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in June.
THE PREDICTION
A straight-sets win for 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz is music to the ears as the 24-year-old can blow hot and cold from tournament to tournament and so an assured start to the US Open suggests he can emulate something of his brilliant Wimbledon campaign. He has never faced Italian veteran Andreas Seppi but this should be an honest, altogether robust second round match on Thursday with very few fireworks. Seppi has a wonderful knack for opening round upsets, armed with his 19-years of professional tennis experience, but the 37-year-old struggles to keep it up in following rounds, especially against the best.
