15th seed Grigor Dimitrov survived a mini blip of a second-set tiebreak against American wildcard Sam Riffice on Monday to come through in three sets. The 30-year-old made the semi-finals here two years ago where he beat Roger Federer in the quarters in a five set epic. He is still capable of that kind of level but it is unfortunately lesser-spotted these days. World number 73 Alexei Popyrin played well to beat Radu Albot in four sets on Monday. The Aussie won his first ATP tour title this season at the Singapore Open after an impressive run of matches in his homeland.
THE PREDICTION
This could be a really fun match if Dimitrov brings his best game to Popyrin’s quickfire power serve. Take both players to win a set here like their first meeting at one of the Melbourne warm-up events back in February where Dimitrov eventually came through in three tight sets. Popyrin’s form has dropped off a bit from his early season charge but he should be able to trouble the Bulgarian in any tiebreak opportunities.
