World number 50 Frances Tiafoe was part of a really competitive four-set first round match with fellow American Christopher Eubanks on Monday. The 23-year-old has been as high as 29th in the ATP world rankings back in 2019 and he has plenty of time and potential to better that sooner rather than later. 31-year-old Guido Pella also enjoyed his best year on tour in 2019, where he reached the quarter-finals of Wimbledon. The Argentine beat 32nd seed Filip Krajinovic from a set down on Monday in an excellent result in keeping with some recent strong performances on tour.
THE PREDICTION
Frances Tiafoe is playing in the Singles and Men’s Doubles this fortnight as he attempts to soak in as much of the home support as possible at the US Open. His most memorable match for some time came in the first round of Wimbledon where he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets in front of a baying crowd, which is where his best tennis is made. Matches like these against steady, hard-working opponents are so often his downfall on the outer courts of tournaments across the tour but in the Louis Armstrong Stadium with the roof likely on this should be to his liking. Pella has played well enough to consider opting for both players to take a set here but the safer option is for an outright Tiafoe victory.
