World number 198 Marco Trungelliti claimed the biggest win of his career over five sets on Monday to oust the 29th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The 31-year-old has never made it past the second round of any Grand Slam and won at Flushing Meadows in only his second tour-level match this season. Fellow Argentine Facundo Bagnis, also 31, enjoyed a much more straightforward win over Taro Daniel in straight sets. The world number 80 has also never made it past the second round of a Grand Slam.
THE PREDICTION
There is a huge opportunity here for one of Argentinian pair Facundo Bagnis and Marco Trungelliti with one of them set to reach the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time. Bagnis’ straight-sets match over Taro Daniel was impressive enough but Trungelliti’s passage through a tough qualifying campaign to win the best match of his career puts him in the driver’s seat here on momentum. Bagnis and Trungelliti have never met at tour level but Trungelliti is 4-2 up at Challenger level matches or below over the years. His defeat of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is a huge statement ahead of a much more winnable fixture, so take Trungelliti to win at least two sets here as the likelier of two capable winners.
