World number 231 Rebeka Masarova has enjoyed a successful season on the ITF circuit this year and she took that form straight into a huge Grand Slam debut win over Ana Bogdan. The 22-year-old qualifier came back from a set down to win a brutal match of three tiebreaks over Bogdan to set up by far the biggest match of her life.
THE PREDICTION
This could be a really enjoyable spectacle of Elina Svitolina lets Grand Slam debutant in at all on Wednesday. So far the fifth seed has looked impeccable but despite her hugely successful career so far there is always the sense that an anomalous slip-up is just around the corner. Svitolina is riding a six-match winning streak here and she should make that seven in straight sets in the second round but Masarova’s momentum makes taking Svitolina as the outright winner a cautious but wise move.
