World number 144 Oscar Otte came back from a set down to emphatically beat the 20th seed Lorenzo Sonego on Tuesday. 28-year-old Otte was in the spotlight at Wimbledon back in July, where he took Andy Murray to five sets in the second round just a month after doing the same to Alexander Zverev at Roland-Garros. World number 92 Denis Kudla also came back from a set down to beat higher-ranked opposition in Laslo Djere and the American has enjoyed some strong form this summer. 29-year-old Kudla beat Taylor Fritz on his way to the Washington Open quarter-finals last month and he took out the 30th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at Wimbledon in July om his way to a competitive defeat to Novak Djokovic in the third round.
THE PREDICTION
This is a tough call indeed in a first meeting between Denis Kudla and Oscar Otte. Both men seem better-suited to the longer format of the sport, with both claiming impressive wins in Grand Slams this year whilst spending the majority of their time on the Challenger circuit. Furthermore, both seem more capable of causing an upset right now than beating a player they are supposed to beat and the likely lack of significant crowds at this match will diminish that added incentive to perform. Otte’s win over Sonego looked a real watershed moment for the German after two brilliant defeats to Zverev and Murray this summer, and if he can nurture the sapling of self-belief sprouting he looks the likeliest player to come through here. Take Otte to win at least two sets.
