World number 88 Corentin Moutet beat Italy’s Stefanos Travaglia in straight sets on Tuesday in a match that did not disappoint for its clear opportunity for aggro. The 22-year-old will face another Italian next as he aims to reach the third round of a Grand Slam for a third time, and second successive season here at the US Open. Eighth seed Matteo Berrettini beat Jeremy Chardy in straight sets in the first round but it was tough going for the 25-year-old throughout. Berrettini finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon back in July.
THE PREDICTION
A first meeting between Corentin Moutet and Matteo Berrettini should be a really enjoyable spectacle on Thursday between two completely different players. 22-year-old Moutet is a marmite player of the highest order with an unorthodox game full of tricks and ploys designed to frustrate his opponents by any means necessary. The Frenchman will do well to enrage Matteo Berrettini, though, whose demeanour on court is most often relaxed as one of the least tetchy Italians on tour.
