The US Open crowds welcomed 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz like a future champion on Monday and he repaid the hype with one of his best performances of the year in beating 26th seed Cam Norrie in straight sets. The Spaniard made the third round of Roland-Garros earlier this year with a similarly stand-out performance against Nikoloz Basilashvili and he could go one better here in New York with a kind enough draw. World number 83 Arthur Rinderknech has enjoyed his best season on tour so far having turned pro later than most players, three years ago as a 23-year-old. The Frenchman came back from two sets down to Miomir Kecmanovic fabulously on Monday in one of his best-ever wins.
THE PREDICTION
Carlos Alcaraz is not just a teenage prodigy over-hyped at a Grand Slam. The 18-year-old won his first ATP title in July at the Umag Open, something that fellow prodigy Felix Auger-Aliassime is yet to achieve at his now 21 years of age. The Spaniard’s game is improving all the time and his mentality is clearly well-suited to focusing on himself and not the increasing noise surrounding him at major tournaments. In a first meeting with Arthur Rinderknech, Alcaraz should have too much variation for the impressive Frenchman to deal with. Rinderknech is great at staying in the match but if Alcaraz can beat Cam Norrie in three sets he can do the same in the second round.
