20-year-old Brandon Nakashima has been touted as a future star for some time in the US but his form across the North American swing this summer has been nothing short of exemplary. The world number 84 faced John Isner for the third time in just over a month after beating the veteran in their first encounter at the Los Cabos Open in July. Isner then returned the favour in the final of the Atlanta Open a week later but Nakashima has grabbed the last laugh on the biggest stage to win in straight sets at the US Open in front of a stunned home crowd. World number 138 Alex Molcan is another youngster who enjoyed his first big campaign earlier this year when he made the finals of the Belgrade Open, finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic. The Slovakian beat fellow qualifier Cem Ilkel from a set down to win in four on Monday.
THE PREDICTION
Brandon Nakashima’s two runners-up trophies at the Los Cabos Open and Atlanta Open were testament enough that the youngster is ready to challenge the current crop of American players challenging but not quite reaching the top 20. Both he and Jenson Brooskby will be well backed this fortnight after opening wins as they aim to emulate and overshadow the likes of Reilly Opelka, Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz in New York. If Nakashima can beat John Isner in straight sets, there is little optimism for Alex Molcan’s chances at reaching the third round of the US Open, at least for this year.
