World number one Ash Barty was made to work hard for her straight-sets win over Russian veteran Vera Zvonareva on Tuesday but the Aussie came through a tough tiebreak to reach the second round. The Wimbledon and Cincinnati Open champion is riding a 13-match winning streak dating back to the first round from SW19 and on course to challenge for a first US Open title this fortnight. Barty also won the Yarra Valley Classic, the Miami Open and the Stuttgart Open for success on all three surfaces this season. 18-year-old Clara Tauson is a vastly impressive future star who won the battle of the “Claras” on Tuesday with a straight-sets victory over Clara Burel. The world number 78 is only moving in one direction and earned her first WTA title at the Lyon Open earlier this year.
THE PREDICTION
Danish teenager Clara Tauson is one to watch on Thursday in what will be the biggest match of her young career against the world number one on Arthur Ashe court. Tauson was the Australian Open Girls’ Singles champion in 2019 and alongside her WTA 250 title at the Lyon Open she also won a 125 event two weeks ago, beating fellow 18-year-old Emma Raducanu in the final in Chicago. She will be competitive against Ash Barty in what has all the hallmarks of an exciting match on Thursday but she has drawn the very shortest straw in the second round. In her current rich vein of form it is hard to see Barty losing to anyone in this US Open draw and she should still just about win this in straight sets.
