World number 93 Anna Karolina Schmiedlova qualified for the US Open as the second seed over the weekend and she has taken that form well into the main draw with a three-set win over Ashlyn Krueger. The 26-year-old reached a career-high WTA world ranking of 26th back in 2015 and she has three WTA titles to her name, most recently winning in Bogota in 2018. 30-year-old Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova also won her last of 12 WTA titles in 2018 at the Strasbourg Open but the world number 15 has been in excellent form this year having reached her first Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros. The Russian beat Alison Riske in comfortable straight sets on Tuesday to reach the second round.
THE PREDICTION
World number 15 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has always threatened the second week at Grand Slams but after five previous quarter-final exits at major tournaments she reached a first final at Roland-Garros back in June. Her form really began to click into gear at the Madrid Open back in early May and since then she has not lost to any player outside the top 50. This first meeting with Schmiedlova holds more questions than answers but the Slovak should find Pavlyuchenkova too powerful in the key moments. Pavlyuchenkova should be winning this in two.
