2017 US Open champion Angelique Kerber had to come back from a set down against a tough opponent in Dayana Yastremska, winning the deciding tiebreak to reach the second round. The 33-year-old won her first WTA title for three years earlier this season at the Bad Homburg Open on grass, her favourite surface, and that campaign has totally changed her season around for form. World number 76 Anhelina Kalinina also needed three sets as she came back from a set down against Egyptian qualifier Mayar Sherif to reach the second round here for a second time. The 24-year-old is playing just her fourth Grand Slam campaign.
THE PREDICTION
Before Kerber’s sudden, all-consuming return to form this summer she faced Anhelina Kalinina for the first time at Roland-Garros this year and lost to her in the first round in straight sets. The world number 17 has a solid chance at reaching the very latter stages of this tournament and she will be well backed here as a former champion. Kailnina is capable forcing a decider in this one but the likelier result would be Kerber winning in straight sets.
