World number seven Andrey Rublev weathered the storm of 42-year-old serve machine Ivo Karlovic well on Monday to come through in straight sets. The 23-year-old reached his first Masters final two weeks ago in defeat to Alexander Zverev at the Cincinnati Open and after a difficult spring and summer he looks up for the challenge once again. He will face 24-year-old Pedro Martinez next after the Spaniard came back from two sets down to beat James Duckworth on Monday. The world number 75 recently reached his first ATP tour final at the Kitzbuhel Open, where he lost to Casper Ruud in three sets.
THE PREDICTION
Pedro Martinez is a gutsy, likeable fighter on court and he showed all of that in a five-set comeback win over James Duckworth in the first round. He has earned the right to take on Andrey Rublev and the Spaniard is possibly in the form of his career so far after recent wins over Gael Monfils and Roberto Bautista Agut alongside a competitive loss to Casper Ruud in Austria in July. However, Rublev should have more than enough to soak up Martinez’s pressure here and although it will be a totally different match to his first round the world number seven should still come through in straight sets.
