33-year-old Andrea Petkovic beat last week’s Cleveland Championships finalist Irina Begu in straight sets on Monday to continue some strong form this summer. The German won her seventh overall WTA title at the Winners Open earlier this month, which was her first title in six years, not soon after losing in the final of the German Open. Ninth seed Garbine Muguruza will face her next after beating Donna Vekic via two tough tiebreaks in the first round. The two time Grand Slam champion has never made it past the round of 16 in New York.
THE PREDICTION
It is surprising to find that the player who leads this head-to-head 3-0 is Andrea Petkovic but the German has beaten Garbine Muguruza three times on hard courts at the 2012 Luxembourg Open, 2014 Sofia Open and the 2016 Qatar Open. Muguruza remains the favourite to avenge that record here but Petkovic can enjoy a big mental boost from those historical results that should make this their second three-set match at the least. Take Petkovic to win at least a set here, especially with Muguruza’s form not quite catching light yet this summer.
