World number three Stefanos Tsitsipas was part of a thrilling five-set epic on Monday night with Andy Murray, coming back from two sets to one down to win the final two. The resulting backlash for the 23-year-old’s extended bathroom breaks has reared its ugly head again, with Murray the latest in a string of players to criticise the Greek’s alleged tactics, and that will affect Tsitsipas as a player who clearly cares what people think of him. World number 44 Adrian Mannarino was exceptional in his own five-set slog against Pierre-Hugues Herbert on Monday, coming back from two sets down to win his first match back on tour since injury in the first round at Wimbledon. The 33-year-old has struggled for most of the season but he was the better player against Roger Federer at Wimbledon before that injury and the month off the tour looks to have suited him well.
THE PREDICTION
Mannarino and Tsitsipas have played each other twice before and have a win apiece from 2019, Tsitsipas wining on clay at the Madrid Open and Mannarino returning the favour on hard in Zhuhai. Mannarino’s 2021 season has been one of the Frenchman’s poorest but he would likely have beaten Roger Federer at Wimbledon had he not suffered an injury in the fourth set there and he could be a thorn in the side of Tsitsipas, who will almost certainly have let the background noise get to him. Realistically this should be straight sets to the Greek, but take him to win outright here with the slightest scent of an upset in the air.
