World number 24 Reilly Opelka looks set to join the ATP top 20 for the first time in what is fast becoming a really promising career and the conditions suit him down to a tee in New York. The 24-year-old is yet to drop a set at Flushing Meadows with three strong wins over Soonwoo Kwon, Lorenzo Musetti and in the third round Nikoloz Basilashvili. The American reached his first Masters final recently, finishing runner-up to Daniil Medvedev at the Canadian Open. Lloyd Harris, also 24, should also be expecting a huge surge up the ATP world rankings after a superb run to the round of 16. The South African has taken out two seeds in Karen Khachanov and most recently world number 10 Denis Shapovalov with a brilliant straight-sets performance.
THE PREDICTION
World number 46 Lloyd Harris beat Rafael Nadal this time last month in a career-best win that possibly went a little underappreciated in terms of his improving form. Harris brings a really enjoyable, laid back energy to the court that has so far won over the crowds at Flushing Meadows. However, he faces the man looking more and more like taking over from John Isner at the top of the game for America in Reilly Opelka, whose big-serving playstyle is loved here more than anywhere else. Opelka beat Harris in three sets at the Canadian Open just last month, where he came back from a set down to win in the round of 16 there on his way to the final. This match up looks like sets could be in it for both players but Opelka’s level is high enough right now that an outright win for him is the sensible move.
