World number 55 Carlos Alcaraz was already at the forefront of conversations regarding the next generation and future Grand Slam champions but the 18-year-old blossomed earlier than expected with an incredible five-set defeat of the third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas. Alcaraz blew the Greek off the court in the first set with some of the most powerful ball-striking seen for some time, certainly from a teenager, on tour and he rallied expertly from a bagel in the fourth set to win a deciding tiebreak. The Spaniard won his first ATP title at the Umag Open on clay earlier this year but clearly he is a player destined for the biggest things across all surfaces like his idol Rafael Nadal. 32-year-old Peter Gojowczyk has also bested his career-high Grand Slam finish by reaching the round of 16 at the US Open. The German has come back from a set down in each of his three matches so far, most recently beating Henri Laaksonen in four sets on Friday.
THE PREDICTION
After his defeat of Stefanos Tsitsipas late on Friday night, in front of a jubilant crowd in the Arthur Ashe Stadium, it feels like the sky is the limit at the US Open for 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard faced idol Rafael Nadal on his 18th birthday at the Madrid Open back in May, losing in straight sets. In the space of four months his game has exponentially grown into something of genuine, awe-inspiring brilliance. It is hard to not overhype a player who has already exceeded his hype this season but it will be the unenviable task of world number 141 Peter Gojowczyk to spoil the party in what is also the biggest match of his long career. The 32-year-old has beaten the 23rd seed Ugo Humbert this campaign as well as a former world number 23 in Dusan Lajovic and he should not be underestimated. However, equally, Alcaraz is hard to overestimate now. Take the teenager to win outright here, and probably in three sets, with the backing of almost the entire New York crowd.
