THE LOWDOWN
25-year-old Matteo Berrettini dropped the first set to Ilya Ivashka and had to fight back twice against the in-form Belarussian before eventually winning their third round encounter in five sets. The Italian reached his first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon back in July and lost to Novak Djokovic in four sets so his ability to do so again and challenge the Serb should not be discounted amongst other contenders. Berrettini made the semi-finals here in 2019, where he lost to eventual champion Rafael Nadal. Oscar Otte beat Italian veteran Andreas Seppi in four sets on Saturday in an altogether more assured performance than his first round epic over Lorenzo Sonego. The 28-year-old is clearly starting to believe in his own ability, with five-set defeats to Alexander Zverev and Andy Murray this summer at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon, respectively, greatly encouraging.
THE PREDICTION
This is such an interesting match-up at this moment in time between world number eight Matteo Berrettini and Oscar Otte, who has got better and better with each passing round at the US Open. The current world number 144 looks set to zoom into the top 100 in the world in what has been a life-changing campaign and a well-deserved one after brilliant performances at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon this season did not quite go his way. Otte’s defeat of Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego in the first round was the touch paper that has seen him turn his best performances against the best players into a winning formula out of the spotlight and if he can transfer that to the tour we should see plenty more of the German. However, his next Italian foe is of a significantly higher quality than Sonego and a tougher man to break serve. 25-year-old Berrettini has struggled at times during this campaign but a five-set victory over in-form Ilya Ivashka should be the catalyst for better form moving forward. Take the sixth seed to win outright here, with Otte capable of taking this to four or even five.
