THE LOWDOWN
World number four Karolina Pliskova will have been glad to beat Ajla Tomljanovic in comfortable straight sets on Saturday after a serious three-set tussle with Amanda Anisimova in the second round. The 29-year-old is yet to win a title this year but her form is promising one sooner or later after she made the finals at both Wimbledon and the Canadian Open, as well as the Italian Open earlier this year. 30-year-old Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova has led something of a charmed life so far at the US Open, winning three kind draws against an out-of-form Alison Riske and two players outside the top 80 in Anna Karolina Schmeidlova and Varvara Gracheva. The Russian has made the quarter-finals here before in 2011 but she set her best Grand Slam finish in June where she finished runner-up to Barbora Krejcikova at Roland-Garros.
THE PREDICTION
Pavlyuchenkova and Pliskova have faced each other eight times before today with the Czech coming out on top 6-2. The two battle-hardened veterans have spent the last decade at the top of the game but Pliskova won all six of their first encounters dating from 2015 to 2018, including at the US Open in 2016 when she went on to reach the final. Pavlyuchenkova has won the last two meetings in straight sets at last season’s Australian Open and earlier this year at the Madrid Open, although Pliskova’s form has certainly picked up this year since the clay season. This should be a thrilling match between two players who have been here and done it plenty of times. Take world number four Pliskova to win outright but this could need a tight decider.
