World number two Daniil Medvedev will have taken notice of third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas’ shock third round exit to Carlos Alcaraz on Friday night, which clears up his side of the draw hugely. The 25-year-old’s campaign has so far flown under the radar with three-successive straight-set wins over Richard Gasquet, Dominik Koepfer and Pablo Andujar, conceding just 22 games so far. World number 27 Dan Evans is one of just five players to have beaten Djokovic this season, in a career-best win in straight sets at the Monte-Carlo Masters. The 31-year-old has struggled with form whilst recovering from covid-19 last month but his five-set victory over Alexei Popyrin, from two sets down, was nothing short of emphatic on Friday. In doing so, the British number one has matched his best-ever Grand Slam finish with a round of 16 exit at the Australian Open in 2017.
THE PREDICTION
A first meeting between Daniil Medvedev and Dan Evans is a must see occasion on Sunday at the US Open. Both players have some of the more varied playstyles on tour and they share other similarities in their ability to frustrate their opponents to no end. Two short fuses facing off on either of Arthur Ashe or Louis Armstrong in front of a huge crowd hoping to egg them on should produce some exquisite tennis and it is hard to say with certainty how this could go. Second seed Medvedev is yet to be challenged at this US Open and could be caught cold by Evans early-on as easily as he could wrap up a fourth-successive match in straight sets. In what will be the biggest match of the 31-year-old’s life, it is hard to see him not forcing at least a tiebreak, so take the world number two to win outright here and cancel your plans to catch this one.
