World number 117 Botic van de Zandschulp has been threatening a Grand Slam performance like this for some time after brilliant five-set performances at Roland-Garros back in June. The Dutchman just scraped through the first round of the US Open with a comeback from two sets down against Carlos Taberner but a win from a set down against eighth seed Casper Ruud in the second round was his best result of the year. 29-year-old Diego Schwartzman has spent a significantly smaller amount of time on court, with three-successive straight-set victories over Ricardas Berankis, Kevin Anderson and Alex Molcan. The 11th seed has led an incredibly charmed life at this US Open as he is yet to face anybody ranked higher than Anderson’s world number 77. The Argentine reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last season and the quarter-finals of the US Open the year before, losing twice to the eventual champion of both in Rafael Nadal.
THE PREDICTION
25-year-old Van de Zandschulp is yet to win the first set after three rounds, with another four-set victory over Facundo Bagnis on Friday, and it was similar fare at Roland-Garros where he dropped the opening two sets in a win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and loss to Hubert Hurkacz. That could be a great alternative to picking a winner here, with Schwartzman looking likely to take the opening set. The Argentine should be going all the way on paper but there is a real sense of an upset hanging around this round of 16 match, with four or five sets looking on. Take Schwartzman to win the first set and you could add Van de Zandschulp to win at least one here too.
