2016 US Open champion Angelique Kerber beat the 2017 champion Sloane Stephens in a proper blockbuster on Louis Armstrong in the third round, coming back from a set down against the well-backed American. Kerber reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon this July after a resurgent first title in three years at the Bad Homburg Open inspired a change in confidence. 18-year-old Leylah Fernandez stepped up to her potential on Friday by ousting the reigning US Open champion Naomi Osaka, also from a set down. The Canadian has been tipped for big things for some time, and she has already enjoyed success on the WTA tour with a title at the Monterrey Open this season, but this is a real breakthrough.
THE PREDICTION
Leylah Fernandez became the latest teenager to explode onto the scene at a Grand Slam with an incredible comeback victory over reigning US Open champion Naomi Osaka. The Canadian has blown hot and cold over the 2021 season, as is her absolute right as a player in only her fourth year as a professional, but clearly the big occasions suit her and that speaks volumes for her near-future in the sport. Having beaten Osaka, the New York crowds will take her under their wing in this likely thriller against former champion Angelique Kerber. The 16th seed is possibly the toughest woman to get past on tour right now with a game built on world class returning and she is too experienced to underestimate Fernandez here. This could see three sets in a first meeting between the pair but Fernandez will have to step it up again with the element of surprise now lost. Take Kerber to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners.
