World number 15 Felix Auger-Aliassime’s US Open campaign had gone slightly under the radar so far with so much excitement elsewhere at Flushing Meadows but the Canadian came back from a set down masterfully to oust home favourite Frances Tiafoe late on Sunday night. Having beaten Roberto Bautista Agut in five sets the round before, the 21-year-old is showing ever-increasing confidence and maturity on the biggest stages, with this his second-successive Grand Slam quarter-final following defeat to Matteo Berrettini at Wimbledon. The idea that Auger-Aliassime is the elder statesman here is laughable but 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz is whipping up a frenzy in New York with his performances so far. The Spaniard beat third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in five sets, in what is probably the match of the tournament so far, and backed that up with another five-set win over qualifier Peter Gojowczyk.
THE PREDICTION
This looks the toughest quarter-final to pick in the Men’s Singles between two youngsters set to spend the next decade at the top of the game. Felix Auger-Aliassime’s level is slowly increasing each season and it will not be long before he starts winning Singles titles but 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz has already done so. The Spaniard won his first ever ATP tour final at the Umag Open last month, whilst Auger-Aliassime has finished runner-up a remarkable eight times so far. That could be the telling difference here in both players’ current cutting edge at this level and if Auger-Aliassime thought playing against the crowd favouring Tiafoe was tough he will have to face a more powerful force against the teenager. This could really go any way at all, with sets likely for both players. The sensible move would be to take both players to win a set and leave the winner up to chance. The less sensible move would be for both to take a set and Alcaraz to keep riding the crest of this career-defining wave.
