The 29 year-old German Yannick Hanfmann comes into this tournament ranked 100th as of July 2021 after a career best year. Hanfmann had previously only reached the finals of two Grand Slam events prior to 2021 (after attempting to qualify for 13 of them). However, he has three successive first round appearances at the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon so far this year. This comes on the back of a runner-up finish in the Austrian Open in September 2020.
ALEXANDER BUBLIK
24-year-old Alexander Bublik is a well-loved maverick on tour who reached a career-high 37th in the ATP world rankings back in May. The unorthodox Kazakh is totally unpredictable from match to match, let alone tournament to tournament, but when he is tuned-in he can provide some excellent entertainment as he favours low-percentage shots. Bublik has reached two finals on tour this season and, impressively, two quarter-finals at the Miami and Madrid Masters.
THE PREDICTION
The head-to-head of these two has Yannick Hanfmann on top after just one meeting in September 2020. Despite that defeat for Bublik, the Kazakh has improved since then and the difference in each other’s ATP ranking would be an example between these two. Bublik is ranked nearly 60 places higher than Hanfmann and he should expect to win this first round match here.
