VIKTORIJA GOLUBIC
28-year-old Viktorija Golubic has enjoyed by far the best season of her career so far with a Silver Medal in the Women’s Doubles alongside Belinda Bencic at the Tokyo Olympic Games the crowing glory so far. The Swiss was excellent throughout the grass season, reaching the quarter-finals of both the Eastbourne International and then, fabulously, at Wimbledon where she beat Madison Keys in the round of 16 before defeat to Karolina Pliskova. She has never made it past the first round of the US Open, though.
BIANCA ANDREESCU
21-year-old Bianca Andreescu has a remarkably different trophy cabinet to most other players on tour with just three WTA titles to their name. The Canadian star burst onto the scene in 2019 to win two Masters events at Indian Wells and her native Canadian Open in Toronto before a stellar run to the US Open title on her debut. Injuries have already played a huge part in her young career and her fitness will be under constant scrutiny here. If she stays fit, she is a contender.
THE PREDICTION
This is a huge early test for the US Open’s sixth seed Bianca Andreescu in a first meeting with in-form Viktorija Golubic. The Canadian star has lost six of her last eight matches since a quarter-final exit via injury at the Strasbourg Open and her fitness will be a constant concern in this and any further matches she plays at Flushing Meadows. Golubic will be well aware of her opponents’ current frailties and she will do well to stick in the match even if she goes down an early set. For that reason, this is best left alone until we can see how Andreescu is playing. If on song, she should blast through in two. If not, this match looks likely to need a decider.
