TSVETANA PIRONKOVA
33-year-old Tsvetana Pironkova reached a career-high of 31st in the WTA world rankings a decade ago and the Bulgarian won her only WTA title to date at the Sydney Open in 2014. The Bulgarian reached the semi-final of Wimbledon in 2010 for her best Grand Slam finish but she enjoyed a stunning run to the quarter-finals here last season, where she beat Garbine Muguruza and Donna Vekic before losing to Serena Williams in three sets.
DARIA KASATKINA
Daria Kasatkina reached a career-high of 10th
in the WTA world rankings in 2018. Two quarter-finals reached at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon that year looked like promising form for the Russian before she struggled for some time for motivation. This year she has won two of her total four WTA titles on a rapid return to the top of the game and she should be targeting a round of 16 finish here at least like she managed back in 2017.
THE PREDICTION
Pironkova was the winner in their only previous encounter way back in 2016 against Kasatkina in her teenage prodigy stage. Since then Kasatkina has lost her way and found it again with winning a Grand Slam her recalibrated goal. Her two WTA titles won this year on hard courts suggest she should be able to go deeper here than she has before and Pironkova will likely struggle to contain the Russian. Take Kasatkina to win outright here, although it will likely fall in straight sets.
