Thiago Monteiro enjoyed some strong personal performances this week at the Winston-Salem Open but lost in the quarter-finals to Frances Tiafoe. The 27-year-old’s best Grand Slam showing was reaching the third round of Roland-Garros last season, where he beat then world number 33 Nikoloz Basilashvili in straight sets in the first round. The Brazilian is possibly better on hard than he is on clay, which is odd for a South American player, and he made the semi-finals of the Great Ocean Road Open in Melbourne earlier this year.
DANIEL EVANS
31-year-old Daniel Evans reached a career-high 25th in the ATP world rankings earlier this year as part of his best season on tour. The British number one won his first ATP title at the Murray River Open in Melbourne at the start of the year but his best showing was a stunning run to the Monte-Carlo Masters semi-finals in which he beat world number one Novak Djokovic in straight sets. Evans has not shied away from the fact that he feels this and next season are his best opportunities for success on the tour but a covid-19 setback in August has seen him lose five of his last six matches. His best showing at a Grand Slam was reaching the round of 16 at the 2017 Australian Open.
THE PREDICTION
Dan Evans is desperate for a deep run at a Grand Slam and that could see him scrap through his first few rounds in a bullish mood, though he will need to improve on recent form. The 31-year-old was in the form of his life at the start of the season but he has struggled to make a proper dent at any of the Australian Open, Roland-Garros and Wimbledon. An opening draw against Thiago Monteiro is his kindest draw of the season and he has beaten the Brazilian in both of their previous meetings back in 2017. Monteiro played well enough at Winston-Salem this week to suggest there could be sets in this for both platers but take Evans to reach the second round.
