TENNYS SANDGREN
30-year-old Tennys Sandgren has had much better seasons than this year, with a 7-14 record coming into the US Open no form at all for this level. However, the enigmatic American comes into his own at Grand Slams, particularly hardcourt Grand Slams, and he will be a menace to anyone. Sandgren won his only ATP title to date at the Auckland International in 2019 but he will be best remembered for his extra level at major tournaments, with his five-et quarter-final defeat to Roger Federer at the 2020 Australian Open a memorable example.
ILYA IVASHKA
Ilya Ivashka won his first ever ATP tour title last Saturday at the Winston-Salem Open in an emphatic victory over Mikael Ymer. The Belarussian did the hard work by ousting top seed Pablo Carreno Busta in the quarter-finals and he has deserved this campaign after a really strong year on tour. Now up to a career-high 53rd in the ATP world rankings, Ivashka reached the round of 16 at Wimbledon last month and he could well do so here.
THE PREDICTION
On paper this looks like a straightforward three-set victory for in-form Ilya Ivashka in the first round of the US Open, with Tennys Sandgren out of form and seemingly motivation at times this season. However, Ivashka’s victory at the Winston-Salem Open just three days ago is always a tough thing to forget and recalibrate from for any player and no one knows, not even himself, how he will react. Sandgren is experienced and battle-hardened. He will know to attack early to catch Ivashka off guard, so take the American to win the first set here and leave the winner up to chance.
