23-year-old Taylor Fritz has endured an odd and often disappointing season in 2021 with recent injury and fitness issues hampering his game. When he is on song the American possesses one of the most powerful and precise forehands on tour that served him well at the Australian Open earlier this year, where he came perilously close to beating eventual champion Novak Djokovic over five sets. Fritz has one ATP title to his name so far but he has reached four semi-finals this season.
ALEX DE MINAUR
22-year-old Alex de Minaur is always a dangerous opponent to draw but he has lost four of his last five matches on tour since winning the Eastbourne International on grass in June. The speedster also won the Antalya Open at the start of the year for a total of five ATP titles and there is plenty of room for improvement left in the Aussie too. De Minaur made the quarter-finals of the US Open last season before losing in straight sets to the eventual champion Dominic Thiem.
THE PREDICTION
This is a high-quality first round fixture with Taylor Fritz just about falling out of the seeds at a Grand Slam. The former world number 24 has never beaten Alex de Minaur, with the Aussie winning the 2019 Atlanta Open at Fritz’ expense in between a Next Gen Finals win in 2018 and win later in 2019 at the Basel Indoors. Neither player is currently playing anywhere near their potential and that makes for a difficult match to call.
