SARA ERRANI
Former world number five Sara Errani is a popular veteran on the WTA tour at 34 years old and she reached the semi-finals here in 2012. The Italian has won all four Grand Slams in the Women’s Doubles over the years but finishing runner-up at Roland-Garros in 2012 is her best showing in the Singles. Errani has an incredible 27 Doubles titles and nine further WTA titles in Singles, her last coming in Dubai in 2016.
EKATERINA ALEXANDROVA
Ekaterina Alexandrova will enter the US Open as the 32nd seed to benefit from a few missing stars but the Russian reached a career-high 25th in the WTA world rankings last year just before the pandemic. The 26-year-old is one of many players whose impressive form was stunted by the suspension of the season but she did manage to win her first WTA title last year in Shenzhen. Alexandrova has never made it past the third round of a Grand Slam and she will be desperate to better that record sooner rather than later.
THE PREDICTION
32nd seed Ekaterina Alexandrova started the season really strongly with a semi-final exit at the Gippsland Trophy and three more quarter-finals leading up to the summer but she has struggled to continue that form over the last few months. The Russian should have more than enough for 34-year-old Sara Errani, whose excellent best tennis is behind her now especially in the Singles, but three losses on the spin suggests there is a possible upset here. Errani was the winner of their only previous encounter back in 2017 but four years on this should be a leveller for Alexandrova. Take the Russian to win outright in a match that could easily see three sets.
