31-year-old Ricardas Berankis enjoyed a run to the round of 16 at the Washington open earlier this month, where beat the 15th seed Miomir Kecmanovic for a best result of 2021. The Lithuanian is a staple of early rounds of Grand Slams and achieved his career-high ATP world ranking of 50th back in 2016. His best finish at any Grand Slam is the third round, which he achieved at the US Open just last season.
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN
29-year-old Diego Schwartzman is undoubtedly at his best on clay but the Argentine has reached the quarter-finals of the US Open on two previous occasions. He made his ATP Finals debut at the end of last season after his best year on tour but since the his form looks to have tailed off a bit. Schwartzman has four ATP titles to his name, including one on hard at the Los Cabos Open in 2019.
THE PREDICTION
Whilst Diego Schwartzman’s well-earned time in the top 10 looks to be behind him now the Argentine is still a tough draw for anybody here at the US Open and well-loved by fans for his dogged playstyle. The 29-year-old reached the quarter-finals here twice in recent seasons following a kind opening match and he has been granted that wish here against Ricardas Berankis. The Lithuanian is no pushover but realistically does not possess the tools required to beat Schwartzman for pace. Take Schwartzman to win in straight sets here, though the safer option inside an accumulator is for outright.
