A specialist in the doubles, Pierre-Hugues Herbert has struggled to replicate that in the singles format. The Frenchman hasn’t made it past the first round of a Grand Slam tournament since his second round finish at the French Open in May 2020. In five appearances at the US Open, Herbert has only made it to the second round on one occasion. In contrast, he was won all four of the Grand Slam doubles tournaments.

Adrian Mannarino has had a relatively steady and consistent career and been a solid competitor in Grand Slams across the last decade. In recent years, though, Mannarino has struggled to go on a run in a major. Mannarino has only made it past the first round of a Grand Slam on three occasions since Wimbledon, 2018. That is eight first round finishes in that time.
THE PREDICTION
This all-French first round affair is likely to be a very close encounter. Mannarino has a 3-0 advantage over Herbert in terms of their head-to-head but their last meeting came in 2014 and they’ve never played each other on a hard surface. Herbert is in better form than his opponent as well as seemingly being better prepared but that aforementioned head-to-head record cannot be ignored.
