PABLO CARRENO BUSTA
30-year-old Pablo Carreno Busta is one of the form players on tour right now but a quarter-final loss to Ilya Ivashka at the Winston-Salem Open this week was a poor result. The world number 12 famously beat Novak Djokovic in the Bronze Medal match at the Tokyo Olympic Games after winning his first ATP 500 title at the Hamburg Open on clay, adding to his Andalucia Open title won earlier this year. Carreno Busta’s level was the cause for Djokovic’s angst in the round of 16 at the US Open last year when the Serb infamously lost by default after accidentally hitting an umpire with an angrily discarded tennis ball.
MAXIME CRESSY
24-year-old Maxime Cressy turned professional two years ago and has a 5-5 record on tour so far. The American made the quarter-finals of the Hall of Fame Open this month with an impressive win over Sam Querrey but he has spent much of the season in qualifiers and Challenger tournaments. Cressy has won both of his first round matches at Grand Slams so far, this time last year here and at the Australian Open earlier this year.
THE PREDICTION
Maxime Cressy put up a stern test for Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round here last season before losing in straight sets and his second Grand Slam campaign was also ended by a top 10 player when Alexander Zverev put him out of this year’s Australian Open. The American will be up for this in a bug way and clearly fears no one but ninth seed Pablo Carreno Busta has great pedigree at this tournament and has been in excellent form this season. PCB is one of a few players at Flushing Meadows with a proven ability to beat Novak Djokovic in recent years, having bested the Serb at the Olympic Games last month but also frustrated him here last season. Take the Spaniard to win in straight sets here, although Cressy will test him early-on.
