Oscar Otte made the second round of Wimbledon last month where he almost beat Andy Murray over five sets in an incredible, intense encounter. The German spends most of his time on the Challenger circuit but he clearly has enough ability to play on the tour more often, with consistency perhaps the missing part of his game.
LORENZO SONEGO
26-year-old Lorenzo Sonego would desperately love to play in the ATP Finals as they move to his hometown of Torino but the Italian will have to go on a significant run to do so. He won his second overall ATP title earlier this year at the Sardegna Open in Cagliari but a semi-final run and three-set defeat to Novak Djokovic at the Italian Open was possibly his strongest showing. Sonego made the round of 16 at Wimbledon in July, losing to Roger Federer in straight sets, but he has never made it past the second round of the US Open.
THE PREDICTION
28-year-old Oscar Otte has had a weird year on tour in which he has taken two US Open finalists to five sets at Grand Slams, first pushing Alexander Zverev all the way at Roland-Garros and then taking Andy Murray to five in the second round of Wimbledon. The German will garner plenty of attention here after qualifying well from three tough matches and 20th seed Lorenzo Sonego should know he will not have this first meeting all his own way. Ultimately, Sonego is strong on hardcourts and his run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon last month suggests he can enjoy another great campaign in the highest stage. However, it is hard to see Otte leave without making things interesting, so take the German to win at least a set here.
