Former world number three Marin Cilic won his 19th ATP title this season at the Stuttgart Open, which was his first title in three years since winning Queen’s Club in 2018. The Croat won his only Grand Slam title at the US Open back in his best year on tour, 2014, where he beat Roger Federer in the semi-finals and Kei Nishikori in the finals both in straight sets. Since then, he has lost two Grand Slam finals to Federer at Wimbledon in 2017 and the Australian Open in 2018.
PHILIPP KOHLSCHREIBER
Former world number 16 Philipp Kohlschreiber has enjoyed something of a swansong this season with several stand-out performances. The German veteran beat Aslan Karatsev at Roland-Garros to reach the third round, took Denis Shapovalov to five sets at Wimbledon to almost halt the Canadian’s stellar campaign and he took the first set off Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Tokyo Olympics. Kohlschreiber has eight ATP titles to his name to show for a long and successful career and his best Grand Slam finish came at Wimbledon in 2012, where he lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter-finals.
THE PREDICTION
This is a first round match of real quality and history between two old foes in Marin Cilic and Philipp Kohlschreiber. The German actually leads their head-to-head record 7-5 in a reel of tight matches spanning from the 2007 Moscow Open to Cilic’s victory at the 2018 Paris Masters. Kohlschreiber even won one of his titles at Cilic’s expense at the 2012 Munich Open, although Cilic claimed their only Grand Slam meeting to date in the first round of Wimbledon in 2017. This should be a really enjoyable occasion on Monday but the winner is hard to call with any real confidence. Take Cilic to win at least two sets here as the likelier man to come through. He has won at least a set in nine of their 12 matches together.
