31-year-old Marco Trungelliti beat in-form Liam Broady in the qualifiers as part of a strong campaign to reach the US Open main draw for only a second time. The Argentine has never made it past the second round of any Grand Slam, although he came very close to doing so at Wimbledon last month in a five-set defeat by Benjamin Bonzi.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina reached a career-high 33rd
in the ATP world rankings in late August and he looks set to be seeded for the first time at a Grand Slam here. The 22-year-old stormed to the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros back in June, beating Casper Ruud in five sets along the way, for his best showing on tour to date.
THE PREDICTION
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina’s run to the Roland-Garros quarter-finals back in June should be seen as a marker for all Grand Slams in his future. The 22-year-old is an excellent all-court player with bags more potential yet to realise, although occasional niggling injuries are a concern already. The Spaniard brings a 22-16 record into Flushing Meadows, which is more matches than Marco Trungelliti has played on tour in his career. Take ADF to win in straight sets.
