MACKENZIE MCDONALD
26-year-old Mackenzie McDonald reached his first ever ATP final earlier this month in a stunning run at the Citi Open that saw him beat Nick Kyrgios, Kei Nishikori and Benoit Paire along the way. The American has long underperformed on tour compared to what he has achieved at Grand Slams, with two round of 16 finishes achieved at Wimbledon in 2018 and at this year’s Australian Open. Something about the longer five-set format has favoured McDonald in the past but he has never made it past the first round at the US Open.
DAVID GOFFIN
It has been a really weird season for David Goffin. The 30-year-old won his fifth ATP title this year in an anomalous campaign at the Montpellier Open but otherwise a 14-14 record for the season includes a five-match losing streak he brings with him to the US Open, stretching back to the Italian Open in May. The Belgian has lost in the first round of his last three Grand Slams but he has been incredibly consistent at Flushing Meadows, reaching the round of 16 in each of his last four appearances here.
THE PREDICTION
Goffin beat a teenage Mackenzie McDonald at the Cincinnati Open way back in 2013 but both players are vastly different prospects now and this US Open tie is a clean slate. Having said that, Goffin’s form right now is questionable at best and McDonald has enjoyed a really strong North American swing, including a first ATP final at the Citi Open. The American is a reliably tough man to beat over five sets and he is currently playing some of his best tennis. It may look like an upset on paper but Mackenzie McDonald beating the 27th seed Goffin in front of American fans would not be a surprise at all.
