Three successive straight set victories in the qualifying tournament saw Ana Konjuh qualify for the main event in impressive fashion. The Croatian 23 year-old reached the quarter-finals of the US Open in 2016 but has seen a steady decline in her performances and results since 2017. Konjuh hasn’t made it past the first round since she reached the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2017.
THE PREDICTION
Despite a rise in the rankings, it is reasonable to suggest that Fernandez isn’t actually having a very successful 2021. The Canadian is less prepared for this event against Ana Konjuh given that Konjuh has had an impressive qualifying tournament. The Croatian, despite a few years of disappointment, will come into this as the slight favourite.
