KAROLINA PLISKOVA
Former world number one Karolina Pliskova reached her second Grand Slam final at Wimbledon in July where she lost in three sets to Ash Barty. The 29-year-old has 16 WTA titles to her name so far and looks to be back near her best form ahead of a very promising US Open campaign. Pliskova’s maiden Grand Slam final came here in 2016 and she has reached the semi-finals of both the Australian Open and Roland-Garros.
CATY MCNALLY
19-year-old Caty McNally is already plying her trade successfully on the Doubles side of the WTA tour, where she has won four titles including two this season at the Emilia-Romagna Open and Charleston Open. Three of those four title shave come alongside friend and compatriot Coco Gauff and McNally is considered a prospect for the future in the Singles too. She reached the third round of the US Open last season but has failed to qualify for any of the other three majors this year.
THE PREDICTION
Since finishing runner-up to Ash Barty at Wimbledon last month Karolina Pliskova has lost a further final to Camila Giorgi at the Canadian Open and then in the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Open to Jil Teichmann. The 2016 US Open runner-up is playing near her best tennis again after a fairly torrid spell of form earlier this year and she should be an almost certain member of the last 16 come the second week at Flushing Meadows. This first meeting with Caty McNally is not easy but Pliskova has not lost in the first round of a major tournament since Roland-Garros in 2016 and is unlikely to start now. Take the Czech to win in straight sets.
