Gianluca Mager has enjoyed a reasonably successful year for somebody of his limited experience in 2021. He has hit a career best performance in every single Grand Slam event this year and now comes into this knowing that a victory against Thompson would make it a clean sweep of career best performances in Grand Slam events for the year. Mager, like Thompson, has reached the final of just one ATP final and that was when he lost to Cristian Garin of Chile in the Rio Open in 2020.
THE PREDICTION
Despite a reasonable improvement in his young career, Gianluca Mager is unlikely to pose much of a threat to his Australian counterpart. Mager’s best performances and his general game is more suited to clay surface and, therefore, that is why Jordan Thompson is likely to come out on top in this likely close encounter.
