JEREMY CHARDY
34-year-old Jeremy Chardy started 2021 like a man possessed as he played some of his best tennis for years to reach the semi-finals of the Antalya Open and Murray River Open as well as the quarter-finals of ATP 500 events in Rotterdam and Dubai. However, the popular Frenchman came back down to Earth with a small bump over the clay season and despite a good campaign at the Olympic Games it is looking unlikely that he will win that elusive first ATP title. Chardy has not made it past the second round of any Grand Slam since Roland-Garros in 2016.
MATTEO BERRETTINI
World number eight Matteo Berrettini won his first ATP 500 event earlier this year at Queen’s Club and took his blistering grass form into Wimbledon, where he took the first set but finished runner-up[ to Novak Djokovic. The 25-year-old reached the semi-finals of the US Open back in 2019 in his previous best showing at a major before defeat to the eventual champion Rafael Nadal.
THE PREDICTION
This will be a powerful match between two of the hardest forehands on tour when Matteo Berrettini and Jeremy Chardy face-off for the second time in their careers. Berrettini was the winner of their previous encounter but it took two tiebreaks to oust the Frenchman at the 2019 Marseille Open and if Chardy brings anything of his best 2021 form to New York we could be in for a long one here. Berrettini’s US Open campaign will be fascinating after he achieved his potential at Wimbledon in July but this is a tricky draw for the Italian. Realistically the world number eight should be winning this in straight sets but given his below-par performance at the Cincinnati Open last time out take him to win outright here.
