26-year-old Jamie Loeb came through the qualifiers to make the main draw at the US Open for only the second time. In fact this is the American’s second Grand Slam campaign after a first round exit in 2015. Loeb reached a career-high of 132nd in the WTA world rankings back in 2018 and she spend most of her time on the Doubles and ITF circuit.
IGA SWIATEK
20-year-old Iga Swiatek has struggled for form on tour for probably the first real time since her stunning run to the 2020 Roland-Garros title. The Pole has still managed to win two more WTA titles this year with wins in Adelaide and at the Italian Open but her transition from clay to grass was poor and she has found hard courts tough so far. Swiatek won Roland-Garros without dropping a set in a ruthless streak not unlike Rafael Nadal’s. If she can find that rhythm early here it should take a top 10 player to stop her.
THE PREDICTION
Although Iga Swiatek has struggled by her standards over the summer the Pole should be able to blast through this opening round mis-match in a first meeting with Jamie Loeb. 20-year-old Swiatek is a contender at any tournament she enters but it will be fascinating to see how far she can go after back-to-back defeats to Ons Jabeur at Wimbledon and the Cincinnati Open. Take her to win ruthlessly here and concede less than five games in doing so.
